Every year nearly 100 million sharks are killed by the unbelievably cruel practice of "shark finning" - a process where fishermen catch sharks at sea, cut off and keep their fins, and throw the still-living animals back into the ocean. These helpless sharks die horribly painful deaths as they sink to the ocean floor and drown, starve to death, or are eaten by other fish. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) has introduced the Shark Conservation Act of 2009 to help close loopholes in the existing laws regarding shark finning in US waters.
